The goal | The main purpose of the course is to provide students with the knowledge of chemical principles and processes involved in the environment. The course initially provides a foundation knowledge of chemical processes in the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere. The course focuses on principles of the Green Chemistry as prerequisites for a sustainable development. ;
The outcome | Upon successful completion of the course, students should understand the nature and properties of the major components of the natural environment; understand the principles of the interaction of substances with and in the environment; demonstrate an understanding of the role of the important physical, chemical and biochemical systems in the environment; offer an acceptable solution for an actual environmental problem. ;
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | Introduction to Environmental Chemistry; Origin and evolution of the Earth; Formation of the crust, atmosphere, hydrosphere; Origin of life; Chemistry of the atmosphere and its pollution; Chemistry of the continental solids and contamination; Water chemistry (continental waters, oceans, seawater); Chemical cycling of major ions; Global change (Carbon cycle; Sulphur cycle; Persistent organic pollutants); Principles of Green Chemistry and sustainable developement.
Contents of exercises | 1. Determination of the ion-exchange capacity of a soil sample; 2. Removal of heavy metal ions from a synthetic waste water using a natural based adsorbent; 3. Preparation of a power point presentation of an actual environmental problem (accident presentation, consequences and the solving method).
