The goal | The aim of the course is to introduce and train students in the field of biocomposite materials with applications in dentistry, pharmaceutics, orthopedic and maxillofacial surgery. It is foreseen that students will adopt the expertise in processing, structural characterization and implementation of biocomposites. Seminar work aims to introduce students in literature survey and methodology to scientific approach.
The outcome | Students acquired basics in synthesis, properties and characterization of biocomposites and their applications in dentistry, pharmaceutics, orthopedic and maxillofacial surgery. Students gained basic expertise in testing of mechanical and surface properties as well as in biocompatibility. Students will develop skills in designing biocomposites with required properties by varying starting materials, their content, geometry and manipulation with their interphase.

Contents of lectures | The course introduces students to the processing, structure, properties and applications of biocomposites and interplay of their application and composition with the focus on ceramic-ceramic, ceramics-polymer and ceramic-bioactive glass systems. The course provides basics in surface characterization and biocompatibility. Special attention is drawn to biocomposite nanoparticles and nanofibers with their applications as drug delivery vehicles. Seminar work will enable students to select appropriate composite configuration as implant material and to acquire basics in processing and characterization methods of contemporary biocomposite materials.
