The goal | To provide an understanding of the basic concepts and phenomena of polymers with respect to their application in cosmetic products. A biodegradable polymers which are used for encapsulation of cosmetic active substances are also covered, as well as encapsulation techniques. | |||
The outcome | After the students fulfilled all the requirements and passed the exam, they acquired knowledge on polymers in cosmetics; they are capable to choose a proper polymers to formulate and stabilize cosmetic products; capable to choose a proper polymers, as well as encapsulation technique for encapsulation of cosmetic active substances. | |||

Contents of lectures | 1. Basic properties, role and significance of polymers in cosmetics. 2. Polymeric surfactants, interaction between polymers and traditional surfactants. 3. Role of polymers in emulsion formulations and stabilisation, foams, micro- and nanoemulsions. 4. Natural and synthetic polymers in cosmetic products. 5. Application of polymers in different cosmetic products: skin care products, hair care products, nail care, make-up products, toiletries. 6. Biodegradable polymers for encapsulation of cosmetic active substances. 7. Examples from practice. | |||
Contents of exercises | 1. HLB calculation, selection of emulsifying agent for W/O and O/W emulsions, stabilization and destabilization of emulsions. 2. Formulation of foams, micro- and nano-emulsions. | |||
