The goal | The goal of the course is to teach the students the concepts and operation of measuring instruments and the methods of measurement of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.
The outcome | Upon the sucsessful completition of the course, the students have: (1) learned the methods of measuring ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, (2) gained communication and social competences for work in engineering teams, (3) gained the communication skills for clear formulation and presentation of the problem
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | Methods of measuring natural radionuclides (alpha spectrometry, gamma spectrometry, aerial gamma spectrometric detection). Methods of radon concentration measurement. Levels of exposure to ionizing radiation from nature and methods for dose estimates. Development of the concept of reduction of exposure to radiation from natural sources. Biological effects of small doses of ionizing radiation. Radiofrequency radiation. Numerical methods for exposure estimates from radiofrequency radiation (field theory methods, optical methods, hybrid methods). Measurement methods for estimation of exposure to radiofrequency radiation in vicinity of cellular phone network base stations (singular measurements, personal dosimeters, monitoring systems). Practical application of measurement methods (measurement protocol, post-measurement procedures, measurement uncertainty estimates). Biological effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic fields.
Contents of exercises | Experimental and demonstration exercises at Vinča Institute for Nuclear Sciences, at the following laboratories: 1. metrology and dosimetry lab, 2. radiation cytogenetics lab, 3. radioecology lab, 4. radiation lab.
