The goal | The aim of the course is that students acquire knowledge of basic biotechnological processes for the production of pharmaceutical products, diagnostic tools and genetic therapeutics. This knowledge will make the students competent to work in modern biopharmaceutical industry.
The outcome | The course prepares students to master biotechnological processes and techniques for the production of biopharmaceuticals.
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | Basic biotechnological processes for the production of pharmaceuticals based on using live cells (bacteria, animal cells, and plant cells), enzymes, tissue culture, DNA or live organisms. The main groups of biopharmaceuticals which are being studied are: antibiotics, vitamins, antibodies, vaccines, interferon and interleukins, hematopoietic factors, therapeutic hormones (insulin), anticoagulants and thrombolytic agents.The course is based on lectures which also include calculations and experimental practice.
Contents of exercises | Practical lessons consists of lab setup of one traditional (fermentation) technology for the production of pharmaceuticals, isolation of the microorganisms for the production of antibiotics, creating an antibiogram, detection of MIC of antibiotic; methods for the analysis, of proteins, methods for the analysis of vitamins, isolation of DNA from biological material.
