The goal | 1. To introduce to students fundamental properties of fluids and laws of fluid statics and dynamics; 2. To solve problems in fluid mechanics relevant for practical problems in the area of chemical engineering; 3. To provide fundamental basis for further development of knowledge and competences in the area of chemical engineering
The outcome | 1. Students acquired knowledge to apply chemical engineering principles to analyses of fluid flow; 2. Students learned basic principles of fluid mechanics and thus gained a fundamental basis for further knowledge expansion in the areas of momentum transfer and transport phenomena; 3. Students gained a theoretical basis for phenomenological comparative analysis of heat, mass and momentum transfer.
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | The course introduces to students basic properties of fluids and laws of fluid statics and dynamics with the focus on chemical engineering approaches based on momentum transport mechanisms. Course topics: General fluid properties; Fluid statics; Fluid kinematics: flow field, flow regimes; Main laws of fluid mechanics in integral and differential forms: conservation of mass, conservation of energy: Bernoulli's equation, conservation of momentum: Navier–Stokes equations and applications to laminar flow between two planes and flow of a fluid film; Laminar and turbulent flow: mechanisms of momentum transfer, fluid flow in pipes.
Contents of exercises | Practical lessons comprise problem solving related to corresponding course topics and cases relevant for chemical engineering and chemical technology.
