The goal | The objective is to get the students familiar with the basics of calculation, construction and exploitation of the equipment in process industry, including the analysis of numerous design solutions and criteria for equipment selection depending on designed technological processes and operations. | |||
The outcome | Through the planned teaching curriculum, calculation examples and completion of the project assignments, students gain knowledge about design solutions of the equipment in process industry. Through the analysis of the calculation, construction and exploitation phases, the students will become familiar with the examples from engineering practice. | |||
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | Classification of equipment in process industry: machines and apparatus. Basic design principles of apparatus in process industry: influence of the chemical and technological requirements; design and possibilities for production and assembly; adjustment of equipment structure to the influence of chemically aggressive environment; working pressure and temperature. Selection of construction materials for production of equipment in process industry. Application of different steels, non-ferrous alloys, non-metallic and composite materials. Examples. Stress and strain in thin-walled pressure equipment, Dimensioning and strength calculation. Directives and standards. Determination of categories of pressure vessels and pipelines according to the European PED directive. Welded joint coefficient. Jacketed vessels. Pipelines and pipeline elements. Thick-walled pressure equipment. Overview of EN 13445 standard. Calculation with respect to the working and testing pressure. Control calculation. Computational examples. Production processes for apparatus in process industry: thermal cutting, shaping, welding, thermal treatment. Acceptance testing of manufactured equipment. Equipment exploitation - designed working life of apparatus and machines. Equipment damage prevention during exploitation. Overview of non-destructive testing (NDT) methods. | |||
Contents of exercises | Basic design solutions and selection of equipment. Examples from industry. Reactors - design solutions for batch and continuous processes. Examples of implemented design solutions for mechanical stirring, heating and cooling in reactors and other apparatus. Storage tanks, columns and towers - examples of implemented constructions. Heat exchangers. Calculation of vertical storage tank - analysis of the load carrying capacity of the opening reinforced by a plate and/or pipe connection. Dimensionig of jacketed pressure vessel (reinforcement of opening on the jacket and top dished end). Dimensionig procedure of a thick-walled pressure vessel. Pipeline dimensioning and strength calculation - consideration of factors affecting the pressure drop, required diameter and wall thickness of the pipe. | |||

Methods of teaching | Lectures and calculation practices in the classroom (using the video beam and blackboard). Analysis of the implemented equipment solutions. Examples of graphical display, dimensioning and strength calculation of devices using the computer and licensed software packages (MS Office and AutoCAD). Work on project assignments in small groups. | |||
