The goal | Theoretical basis of electroanalytical methods (EAMs), the adoption of the basic techniques, methods and skills necessary to perform electroanalytical methods, the application of Nernst equation to calculate the concentration of ions and the equilibrium potential, calculation of: chemical equilibrium, equilibrium constants and ion and molecule concentration.
The outcome | The theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of electroanalytical methods for the determination of elements, ions and compounds in aqueous solutions. Training for independent analysis based on electroanalytical methods used to evaluate the quality of different samples: water (content of cations and anions), solutions of acids, bases, salts. The ability to measure electrical values in order to determine the pH of aqueous solutions, the concentration of cations and anions, conductivity of solutions and ions, equilibrium constants of reactions.
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | Introduction: The principles and application of electroanalytical methods. Selecting criteria for methods of analysis and classification of methods. Comparison of EAMs for accuracy, precision, sensitivity, detection limit, measuring and applicability. General concepts: oxido-redox reactions, Nernst equation, the electrochemical interface, the electrodes of different kind. EAMs include: non current methods- potentiometry, direct (ion-selective electrodes) and indirect measurments, calorimetry and oscillometry; current methods - coulometry, polarography, striping voltammetry, amperometry. Review of modern EAMs in chemical analysis. Summary, development and application of EAMs in the analysis and quality control of real samples.
Contents of exercises | Laboratory exercises and practices exercises. Measurement of electrical characteristics of substances in solution: potential, current, conductivity, amount of electricity, frequency. Experiments are developed and applied based on voltamperometry (amperometry, polarography and stripping voltammetry), culometry, potentiometry and conductometry. Selecting and applying appropriate equipment to determine an analytical composition, quality of samples and quantity of investigated elements. Practices exercises: (examples and tasks).
