The goal | The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the very important field of ceramic, polymer and composite biomaterials that are used in pharmacy, medicine and dentistry. Students will be introduced to the most important types of biomaterials, and the method of their synthesis as well as their most important applications.
The outcome | Students acquire knowledge about the structure, properties, methods of synthesis and application possibilities of ceramic, polymer and composite biomaterials. Handle the possibility of their use in controlled drug release systems, tissue regeneration and implant production in pharmacy, dentistry, orthopedic and maxillofacial surgery and special areas. The subject also provides the basics of mechanical and surface properties of these materials as well as their biocompatibility.
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | Fundamentals of biomaterials science-processing, structure, propertes and performances of biomaterials. Introduction to the classification of biomaterials. Ceramic biomaterials. Cement biomaterials. Basic principles of biomineralization. Synthesis and characterization of ceramic biomaterials. Fundamentals of polymeric biomaterials. Structure, properties and applications of polymeric biomaterials. Important natural and synthetic polymeric biomaterials. Stimuli-sensitive polymers-"intelligent hydrogels". Systems for controlled drug release based on hydrogels. Antimicrobial polymers. Polymers for skin regeneration application.Composite biomaterials. Nanocomposite biomaterials. Biocompatibility. Sterilization of medical devices and FDA standards.
Contents of exercises | Demonstration exercises in the synthesis and characterization of materials using modern methods (FTIR, SEM, AFM, TGA and in vitro testing of the SBF). Solving tasks that give insight into the synthesis, properties and characterization of biomaterials. Solving tasks in the fields of biodegradable polymers, hydrogels and controlled release systems in order to gain complete knowledge of application materials in the field of pharmacy and medicine. Homework and seminar essay in the selected area aims to introduce students to the latest developments in the field of literature and analyzing scientific papers to a more comprehensive insight at this area.
