The goal | Students acquire specific knowledge regarding the mass integration in chemical processes, related to graphical, algebraic and mathematical methods for the synthesis of integrated processes. By studying the mentioned methods, they acquire knowledge and skills related to the use of specialized software for process simulation, process optimization by mathematical programming and graphical representation of processes. By mastering the course material, students adopt a process design approach that first defines the desired process performance and then performs methodologically detailed steps that need to be taken to achieve the target performance in an economically optimal manner. | |||
The outcome | During the course, students are trained in the following: Understanding of process synthesis, integration and optimization in accordance to circular economy concept; Analysis of material flows at plant-wide level; Detailed cost calculation of the mass transfer devices based on the detailed design of the device; Consideration of thermodynamic, designing and economic-optimizing aspects of the process; Selection of separation operations (for mass transfer) by pinch method; Establishing the optimal ratio of fixed and operating process costs; Synthesis of direct-recycle network and synthesis of the mass exchangers network in process; Defining the desired / required performance of the process from the point of view of achieving the specific goals of certain material flows in the process; Defining allocation, segregation, mixing, direct recirculation and interception of material flows, in the function of mass integration in the process; Use of software tools for evaluating process economics; | |||

Contents of lectures | The concept of circular economy from an engineering point of view.The concept of sustainability, sustainable design and process integration. Basic concepts of process economics. Benchmarking process performance through overall mass targeting. Maximum product yield, minimum usage of fresh materials, minimum consumption of utilities, minimal discharge of pollutants from the process. Synthesis of direct-recycle network - graphical approach. Synthesis of the mass exchanger network - grafical approach. Combining strategies for integrating mass into the process. Property integration. Synthesis of direct-recycle network - an algebraic approach. Synthesis of the mass exchanger network - an algebraic approach. Mathematical optimization Macroscopic approaches to process integration. | |||
Contents of exercises | Class room exercises, computer work, application of software packages. Selected examples of industrial processes are the subject of practical work. Students perform an optimization of the direct-recycle networks and the synthesis of a mass exchanger network using a software tools / programming languages. A process simulation is performed prior to and after mass integration procedure, in order to technological and economic performances of the nonitegrated and integrated process be compared. | |||
