The goal | To provide an understanding of the basic concepts and phenomena of polymers concerning their application in cosmetic products. Biodegradable polymers which are used for encapsulation of cosmetic active substances are also covered, as well as encapsulation techniques.
The outcome | After the students fulfilled all the requirements and passed the exam, they acquired knowledge on polymers in cosmetics; they are capable to choose a proper polymer to formulate and stabilize cosmetic products; capable to choose a proper polymer, as well as encapsulation technique for encapsulation of cosmetic active substances.
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | 1. Basic properties, role, and significance of polymers in cosmetics. 2. Polymeric surfactants, the interaction between polymers and traditional surfactants. 3. Role of polymers in emulsion formulations and stabilization, foams, micro-, and nanoemulsions. 4. Natural and synthetic polymers in cosmetic products. 5. Application of polymers in different cosmetic products: skincare products, hair care products, nail care, make-up products, toiletries. 6. Biodegradable polymers for encapsulation of cosmetic active substances. 7. Examples from practice.
Contents of exercises | 1. HLB calculation, selection of an emulsifying agent for W/O and O/W emulsions, stabilization, and destabilization of emulsions. 2. Formulation of foams, micro-, and nano-emulsions.
