The goal | The course introduces the students to the generation of pollutants in combustion. Students gain knowledge on pollutants reduction by combustion control, as well as the pre-combustion treatment of fuels and post-combustion treatment of combustion products.
The outcome | At the end of course the students should be able to identify pollutants from combustion, to define and control the combustion in order to prevent or minimize the formation of pollutants.
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | The fundamentals of combustion processes. Combustion generated pollutants. Classification of pollutants. Primary and secondary pollutants. Effects of pollutants. The nature of photochemical smog. Thermodynamics and kinetics of SOx formation. Control methods of SOx formation. Kinetics of NOx formation in combustion processes. NOx formation from fuels. Combustion control methods for NOx (primary measure). Flue gas control methods for NOx (secondary measure). Formation and control of formation of products of incomplete combustion.
Contents of exercises | Basic calculations of the combustion process. Basic calculations for the combustion of gaseous, liquid and solid fuels. Estimation of the air/fuel ratio on the basis of the analysis of combustion products.Incomplete combustion. Emission indices. Corrected concentrations. Emission from premixed combustion. Emission from nonpremixed combustion.
