      The goalThis course examines principles, procedures, methods, and applications of environmental impact assessment. The objective of the course is to promote an understanding of how environmental impact assessment is conducted and used as a valuable tool in the engineering project management decision-making process.
      The outcomeAfter completing the course the students will have: knowledge about the motivation and background for performing environmental impact assessments. Knowledge and skills in relation to the framework and procedures of environmental impact assessment with specific regard to its basic principles, definitions, procedures and applied methods. Basic knowledge and skills to practice a number of selected methods used in Environmental impact assessments.
      Contents
      Contents of lecturesThe course will give basic knowledge on Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) in an international perspective. Focus will be on the processes and methods used to implement the goals of EIA. Examples on how the EIA process is carried out in different technologies (eg. waste water treatment, solid waste management) will also be included. Training in methods and project work is also given.
      Contents of exercisesThe practical part is based on seminars, exercises and excursions. The exercises will be presented by the students as written reports and oral presentations.
