The goal | To introduce students to the major aspects of modern chemistry of macromolecules from the structure, to the way of performing synthesis. Deepen the knowledge about the mechanism and kinetics of chain and stepgrowth polymerization, as well as the mode of regulation of molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. The properties and applications of polymers are presented depending on the structure of their molecules.
The outcome | After successful completion of the course students: (i) acquire the ability to design and synthesize polymer molecule by free radical and stepgrowth polymerization, (ii) mastered experimental techniques of polymer synthesis, (iii) acquire a level of knowledge for a clear determination of tasks and for presentation of research results.
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | The course gives the important aspects of modern chemistry of macromolecules: the mechanism and kinetics of chain and stepgrowth polymerizations, as well as the ways of regulating molecular weights and molecular weight distribution of polymer. Reactions on synthetic and natural polymers. Also, nonconvetional ways of initiation and techniques of polymers' synthesis are presented. Controlled radical polymerization such as atom transfer free radical polymerization (ATPR), stable free radical polymerization (SFRP) or nitroxy-mediated radical polymerization (NMP) and reverzible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT). Metathezis polymerization. Polymerization in solid state. Polymerization on suport.
Contents of exercises | In the research study, it is envisaged that the student should carry out a literature review, design an experiment, do two polymer synthesis and characterize them in terms of structure as well as present the results. It is intended for every student to perform two syntheses, and the choice is among following: Synthesis of hyperbranched functionalized polymers. Synthesis of interpenetrating and semi-interpenetrating polymer networks. Synthesis of multi-block copolymers by polycondensation reation. Preparation of polymer by using controlled radical polymerization.
