The goal | The aim of the course is to show the great potential of mass spectrometry (MS) for the identification and quantification of organic compounds. In this regard special emphasis is placed on combined techniques, "GC-MS" and "LC-MS", which enable the analysis of complex mixtures as well as "ICP-MS" method and elemental isotopic analysis.
The outcome | During the course, students should acquire knowledge that enables them to apply mass spectrometry in different areas of the structure analysis and identification of compounds in the quantitative determination of trace analytes in complex mixtures. Also, students will develop experimental skills in the application of combined techniques "NRLC-MS", "HPLC-MS/MS" and "ICP-MS".
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | The program includes traditional activities, explaining the basic principles of mass spectrometry, as well as recent developments, particularly in the field of ionization techniques (EI, CI, APCI, ESI, MALDI ) and of different types of analyzers ( magnetic, electrostatic, quadrupole, different types of ion alignment, analyzer based on time of flight). The characteristics of different combinations of analyzers in hybrid instruments are included, which allow significantly expand the application of mass spectrometry as a method of chemical analysis, as well as a research discipline. For the identification of organic compounds using ion fragmentation reactions, the so-called "MS -MS" spectra for quantitative analysis of complex mixtures using the combined techniques "GC/MS" or "HPLC/MS" or "HPLC/MS- MS" will be demonstrated in the laboratory. Special attention will be paid to izotopic analysis and quantitative analysis of metals.
Contents of exercises | Labs: Recording mass spectra of compounds and the isotopic composition of elements, tandem mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography with mass spectrometric detection, coupled plasma with mass spectrometric detection.
