The goal | Develop an understanding of the chemistry of key biological molecules. Interpret biological pathways in terms of thermodynamics, chemistry, regulation and apply these skills to the understanding of novel pathways.
The outcome | Describe the primary catabolic and anabolic pathways pertaining to the following molecular classes: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, vitamins For each methabolic pathway , identify the key regulatory points, the energetics of the reactions and the key chemical transformations involved.
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | Introduction to the major classes of biological molecules and their chemistry in living systems.Chemistry of biomolecules with emphasis on the bioenergetics and control of metabolic pathways via regulation of specific enzymes.Course contains chapters: bioenergetics, enzymes as biological catalysts, biological oxidation, intermediary metabolism, metabolism (anabolism and catabolism) of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, nucleic acids, inorganic salts, water, vitamins.
