The goal | The aim of this course is to introduce students to modern methods of solid and hazardous waste management, to apply lessons learned to appoint the most suitable treatment and technology for the development of an adequate waste management system in a particular area. Individual work assignment, in which students solve a concrete example, following the waste stream from generation to disposal, through the analysis of several possible solutions, select the best performing wit the lowest impact on the environment, enabling students to critically analyze and selection process for the treatment of solid and hazardous waste.
The outcome | Understand solid and hazardous waste management with respect to its history, physical properties, and associated considerations in the technical and economic evaluation of emerging technologies. Outline processes for waste incineration, composting, including the fundamental technology required to ensure operational effectiveness wirthin acceptable environmental parameters.
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | Desription of waste; different types of waste; classificatioon of waste; amounts and composition of waste; causes of the waste problems and strategies to minimize these problems; waste hierarchy; waste treatment and handling; thermal and biological methods, landfilling.
